Due to his stubborn persistence, Rod was soon allowed to join the newly-formed th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division. After four months of basic training at Toccoa, Georgia, Rod was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, for his jump training.

Rod received his Silver Wings and was now a full-fledged Army paratrooper.

On April 25, , the 11th Airborne Division was sent to California to be shipped to the Pacific Theater of Operations to combat the Japanese.
